Our standards

Why you should trust us

Written by Chantelle, co-founder of koppā. A brand reviewing its own category has an obvious bias, so here is exactly how we kept this page honest.

Every claim is sourced

Each research claim links to a peer-reviewed paper or a primary source, numbered in the text and listed at the end of this page.

Other brands, in their own words

Concentrations, sizes, prices and ingredients come from each brand's own product page, checked on the date shown, and quoted where the wording matters.

We say what we don't know

Where a brand doesn't state something, we write "Not stated". Where the research hasn't tested something, we say that too.

Our bias, up front

We make the first serum on this list. We put it first and tell you so, instead of hiding it in a footnote.

Our numbers are on the bottle

koppā prints its GHK-Cu concentration on every product, so you can hold us to the standard we hold everyone else to.

Kept up to date

We re-check labels and prices and date every update. Spot something wrong? Tell us and we'll fix it.

Method

How we evaluated copper peptide serums

Six things you can check on any label. We applied them to every serum here, ours included.

Criterion What we checked Why it matters
Stated GHK-Cu

Whether the label gives a GHK-Cu percentage, and whether it measures GHK-Cu itself or a supplier complex.

It's the only number you can compare across brands. A percentage in a product name, or of a blend, is not the same thing.

Ingredient position

Where Copper Tripeptide-1 sits on the ingredient list.

Ingredients are listed roughly by amount, so with no percentage, position is the best clue to how much is in the bottle.

Supporting ingredients

Other peptides and actives the brand names.

A serum is a formula, not a single ingredient. What sits around GHK-Cu shapes how it feels and how well you tolerate it.

Fragrance and silicones

Whether the brand states the formula is free of them, read against the ingredient list.

Fragrance is a common cause of irritation, and copper peptides are often chosen by people with easily irritated skin.

Price per ml

List price on the brand's own US site, divided by the size.

Bottles here run from 15 ml to 45 ml. The sticker price alone hides big differences in value.

The brand's directions

How often to use it, and anything the brand says not to pair it with.

A serum you can use every day, alongside your routine, is one you'll actually keep using.

The science
The scienceGHK-Cu / Copper Tripeptide-1

What are copper peptides?

Small protein fragments bound to copper. The one with the deepest research behind it is GHK-Cu.

GHK-Cu is three amino acids, glycine, histidine and lysine, holding a single copper ion. On ingredient lists it is called Copper Tripeptide-1, and the copper complex is what makes these serums blue.

GHK was first isolated from human albumin in 1973, and it binds copper strongly to form GHK-Cu1. It occurs naturally in the body: blood levels are about 200 ng/mL at age 20 and fall to around 80 ng/mL by 6012.

The evidence

What the research shows, and what it doesn't

From the lab bench to human skin. The further down this list, the closer the evidence is to what happens on your face.

In cells

GHK-Cu increased collagen production in fibroblast cultures3, and cells responded at very low, nanomolar concentrations4. In gene data from cells, it shifted the activity of about 31% of human genes by 50% or more2.

On skin samples

On human skin in the lab, the peptide reached and stayed in the skin layers rather than passing through5.

On people

A 12-week study of a GHK-Cu facial cream in 71 women reported greater skin density and thickness and less laxity; a 12-week eye cream study in 41 women did better than placebo2.

What hasn't been tested

Most human studies are small and short, several were run or reviewed by the peptide's discoverer, and none compares the serums on this list. No study shows that a higher concentration works better.

Safety

Are copper peptides safe?

For most people, yes, on the evidence available.

Topical GHK-Cu has been used in cosmetics for decades, and the reviews that gather the research describe it as well tolerated12. Skin-penetration work shows the peptide stays largely in the skin5. Copper allergy is rare, but it is real6. Our full safety guide covers side effects in detail.

Usually mild, usually early

Dryness or tightness in the first couple of weeks, most often from using too much too soon. Cut back to once a day and moisturise on top.

Patch test first

Try a new serum on a small area for a few days before using it on your face7.

Ask a doctor first if

You're pregnant or breastfeeding, you're under a dermatologist's care, or you've reacted to copper before. These situations haven't been studied, which isn't the same as unsafe.

Is it for you?

Who are copper peptide serums for?

Skin that can't take retinol

A gentler active with no irritation phase12, for the nights retinol has off or instead of it. See copper peptides vs retinol.

Easily irritated skin

Choose a fragrance-free formula, start once a day, and give your skin two weeks before adding anything else new.

Firmness and texture

For skin that looks firmer and smoother over weeks, not overnight. The human studies ran for 12 weeks2.

One active, not ten

A single, well-researched ingredient that layers with what you already use, morning or night.

Not the right choice for broken skin, a known copper allergy, or anyone expecting overnight results. Copper peptide serums are cosmetics, ours included, and none is meant to treat a medical condition.

FAQ

Questions about copper peptide serums

What is the best copper peptide serum?

Start with the label. koppā states 2% GHK-Cu, NIOD states 1%, and the others we compared don't state a GHK-Cu percentage. Then compare price per ml and what else is in the formula. We make koppā, so weigh our answer accordingly, but those are the checks we'd use on anyone's bottle.

Is a higher percentage of GHK-Cu better?

Not automatically. Cells respond to GHK-Cu at very low concentrations4, and no study compares concentrations head to head. A stated percentage gives you something to compare; the rest of the formula and how your skin tolerates it matter too.

What is Copper Tripeptide-1?

It's the name GHK-Cu goes by on an ingredient list: the peptide glycine-histidine-lysine bound to copper. It was first isolated in 1973 and has been studied for decades in cells, skin samples and people12.

How long do copper peptides take to work?

Give it weeks, not days. The human studies of GHK-Cu creams ran for 12 weeks2; most people judge a serum after two to three months of daily use.

Why are copper peptide serums blue?

The colour comes from the copper-peptide complex itself, not an added colourant.

Can I use a copper peptide serum with retinol or vitamin C?

Many people do, on alternate nights. Some brands advise against using theirs in the same routine as acids, vitamin C or retinoids, so check the label. Our retinol guide covers the routine.

Is this list sponsored?

No. No brand paid to be here and the links to other brands earn us nothing. We make the first serum on the list, which is why we say so at the top.
